Subotica - The Norwegian Connection

"Are you from Norway?" asked the breakfast buffet hostess at our hotel. "No" I replied. Sun-Ling and I both thought it an odd question but then noticed that the breakfast room TV was tuned to a Norwegian channel and most of our fellow breakfasters were watching. OK, not so odd as most of the guests are from Norway. But why are all these Norwegians here in Subotica, a Serbian a city just a few kilometers from the Hungarian border and known mainly for its Art Nouveau architecture.

Dental tourism is the answer. Just 10 meters from our hotel is a Nordent facility for all your dental needs at presumably a much lower cost than in Norway.

Here are a few of the photos I took of Art Nouveau buildings in Subotica. To see lots more on flickr click here.

One of the highlights was the Jewish Synagogue which fell into disuse after WWII as the surviving Jewish population left for Israel. It is now belongs to the state, is protected and under renovation. Here are several photos of the exterior and interior.

Ah, I only got to go inside the town hall. Clearly I need to go back! Love the photos.

I love the architecture of this city. They even made the water tower attractive. Oh, how I wish other cities would follow with the bus notification signage.

When Kathy first alerted me about Subotica, I wasn't even that impressed by photos (Liz, you must be better at looking at photos), but I knew I LOVE art nouveau buildings, so we have Subotica on the list, along with a few other stops, specifically for their art nouveau architecture. For me, they are amazing to see. We tried hard to get into them whenever we could. More photos are on the way.

We first saw those bus signs in Taiwan a few years ago and too thought they are great inventions. In some cities (don't remember which ones) on this trip, one can text to get bus arrival times -- we are from the boonies :(
