Quick stop in Oviedo

From Santiago, we are headed to the Picos de Europa National Park for some hiking. Oviedo seemed like a good place for a stopover. We arrived around 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. The town was eerily quiet, unworthy for a provincial capital. However, when siesta was over, the whole town seemed to be in the streets, plus some.

Oviedo seemed rather prosperous. Maybe the local people are particularly motivated; many Spanish immigrants in the Americas are from Oviedo. I read that the biggest festival in Oviedo is the Day of the Americas. John thinks that may also explain the hodgepodge looks of buildings, not ugly, but certainly unusual.

The highlight of our visit has to be El Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias (Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias). We found it particularly interesting; that is, the traditions and old ways of life that we gleamed from different artifacts in the past few weeks are fully illustrated here by local artists.

I noticed the same thing in Burgos. Ghost town in the afternoon, full of people after 6:00pm, even though it was October and really cold in the evening!

One day we went to see the old town. Not that I had much expectations, what we found was that they were rebuilding the "old" town....
