From Montpellier, we made a half-day trip to Saint Guilhem le Desert, a scenic village on The Way (pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela). Now that I figured out what constitutes "Plus Beau Village", being killer photogenic viewpoint of the village, I might have decided to skip, except it is UNESCO and in a gorge.
We took the bus to Pont du Diable, a medieval bridge at the beginning of the gorge, and walked along The Way and the water to the village of Saint Guilhem le Desert. The gorge and the water were beautiful except part of the walk is along the car road, so atypical.
The village was having a lot of traffic, quite a few people walking The Way with big packs. We had a short walk to the viewpoint. Great views of surrounding hills, not so much of the village. I was wrong. Nevertheless, it was an enjoy visit on a very nice day.
Pont du Diable as seen from the newer bridge.
Walking up the gorge along the river.
Abbey and Church.
The viewpoint views were spectacular! And we ate our lunch there!
Headed back to the bus stop.
Sun-Ling and John have been traveling the earth since 2008 while blogging, eating vegetarian and vegan, and riding public transportation. We love uphill day hikes, 20th-century architecture, Roman ruins, all bodies of water, local markets, shopping for groceries, aqueducts, miradors, trip planning, blablacar, and more.
